My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
On July 4th we celebrate the birth of our nation. The United States is 250 years old, marking its semiquincentennial (250th anniversary). We thank God for the gift of liberty, for those who sacrificed to secure it, and for the blessings we too often take for granted.
July 4th is also a day of consecration. The Catholic bishops of the United States, following the call of Pope Leo XIII in 1899, have renewed the dedication of our country to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Why the Sacred Heart? Because the Heart of Christ is where true freedom begins. Flags and constitutions can guard our freedoms, but only the Heart that was pierced for us can heal our divisions, cast out our fears, and make us "one nation, under God."
